Hiking to Puente Nueva on La Palma

Today was a wonderful day for hiking up at Roque de Los Muchachos. The passat clouds reach a maximum height of about 1800m. Today was a good day to observe this phenomenon. My starting point today was a small parking place at 28°45’40.0″N 17°52’02.7″W. There is not so much space and parking here felt a little strange 🙂 From here a small path leads to Puente Nueva which is smaller summit near Roque de Los Muchachos. It takes just about 30 minutes from the parking place to the summit which is directly located beside the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) and the Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope (JKT). Still you should be sure-footed when taking the path. The path offers a great view into the caldera and across the island.

Clear skies!

Milkyway time-lapse with Vixen Polarie & Fujifilm X-T1

This article is about creating a time-lapse with the Vixen Polarie and a Fujifilm X-T1 camera. Tonight I did a first experiment with the Vixen Polarie. I did not know this device before. It was rent to me by a friend on La Palma. Basically it is a kind of motorized mini-mount for the camera. One the one and can track the night sky (compensate the earth rotation) for longtime exposures. This just needs a good alignment to Polaris. On the other hand one can just mount the camera in order to do time lapse recordings.

I decided for the second option and tried to make my first time lapse with the Vixen Polarie and my Fujifilm X-T1 of the milky way. Below is the result. I am quite pleased with the smooth movement from left to right. Probably something similar could also be achieved by using a good video cut software. However, doing it this way I always have the full resolution available and the post processing is simpler.

Clear skies!

Visiting Roque de Los Muchachos at night

Last night I visited Roque de Los Muchachos again – this time in the dark. For me, driving up all the mountain from Tijarafe in the dark is quite exhausting. In fact you make countless left- and right-turns on your way up. This evening I didn’t meet a single car on the whole road to the top. Since the road to Roque de Los Muchachos is closed after 7pm one cannot drive up to the real top. However, there are a few possibilities where one can park the car. Still I think it makes sense to see the whole area at least once at daytime since it is really really dark up there 🙂 When I parked the car, switched off the light and stepped out the car I first saw nothing at all (when I was there it was around new moon)…

Greetings from Northern Optical Telescope (NOT) on La Palma

Greetings from the Northern Optical Telescope (NOT)! Quite often I used this webcam to check the weather on top of Roque de Los Muchachos and even more often I just was wishing to be up there while sitting in the office at home.

While being up at el Roque this time I finally decided to do something nonsensical and just waved into the camera to greet all astro-fans at home 😀

Clear skies!
