Today was a very special day for star-gazers and astronomers. For about 7 hours the Mercury sun transit could be observed what is a quite seldom event. At 11:12 UTC Mercury started to show up in front of the sun and left again at 18:42 UTC. The little planet will not transit again until 2019 and then again 2032. More information can of course be found on wikipedia.
One of the images made it into “My Top Astro-Pics Gallery” and is also available in full resolution.
For me it was great to see the Mercury sun transit with my own eyes and again getting an idea of how huge the sun is compared to all the planets. Untrained eyes have to look twice to recognize little Mercury on the photo. Simply fantastic!

Last night the sky was unfortunately not clear… so there was no chance to watch the stars. Instead a strong thunderstorm passed by in the south. I decided to grab my Fujifilm X-T1 camera (with standard lens) to catch some lightning. First problem… no SD card was in the camera…. Beginner’s mistake 😀

This article is about Astrophotography in Oberstdorf. Last year I put all my equipment into the car and drove to Lake Garda. Unfortunately, in contrast to the forecast I had lots of clouds and no chance to take a good astro-picture. Last weekend I decided to give it another try and took all my equipment to Oberstdorf – a small village at the foot of the German Alps. Beside hiking I think this place is well suited for astrophotography.
I found a good place not far from the center of Oberstdorf, with free view to Polaris and almost no traffic:
GPS coordinates: 47°24’17.5″N 10°17’28.9″E
Important update: The described location can only be reached by car when driving into a “no entry” road. Of course you do this on your own risk.
(Oh, and btw. a good Italian restaurant is also not too far: Ai Quattro Canti…)
